Why do communities exist? For internal or external purpose? Or both?

Communities with internal purpose exist to take care of themselves. The members come together to support each other, learn from each other, inspire each other, to feel a sense of fellowship, safety and belonging together. Communities with external purpose exist to pursue an external goal.
