Obviously, the recent issues of privacy on social media are of great concern, as are the ways in which misinformation is spread and bullying takes on toxic forms, from the White House on down. In particular, Amnesty International recently released a report [1] on Twitter, citing that women are bullied and abused on the platform every 30 seconds and that women of colour, black women, in particular, experience the worst kind of abuse with the greatest frequency.
Still, I have found a great community in many of these spaces. I believe that leveraging social media for good requires two things:

Authenticity. You simply can not be a different person online than you are offline. People sharing their stories allow for connection; people giving in to their honest curiosities give us an opportunity to learn; people sharing their triumphs give us hope in the possible.
Truth. This will only be a “post truth” world if we let it be. It’s not perfectly egalitarian, but social media has aided in the democratization of information. We must make sure that the information we share on our platforms, no matter the size, is true and moves us closer to justice, not more inequity.
